People magazine has a cover story on Newman in the current (Oct 15) issue. Couldn't find it on line so I'm transcribing the key part here:
"(Newman) won four SCCA National Championships and came in first for his car class in the 1995 Rolex 24-hour race at Daytona, making the then 70-year-old the oldest driver ever to win a major professional auto race." Oh, yeah -- he also raised $250 million for charities. And -- 135,000 seriously ill children benefited from free attendance at his 11 Hole in the Wall camps. Oops -- almost forgot: he was married for 50 years. And ... he made a few movies. To combine those last two is distinguished enough. To do it all makes Paul Newman a real American hero I will miss very much. ------------------------------------ |
