I'll put McCain up +18-20 in the county I live in (Placer), even though it's not as Republican as it once was, it's still the highest Republican county in the state (over 100K Population, Modoc is the highest, but there's not many people there) (48% Republican). Sacramento is a good 50/50 mix, City being more Liberal than the county, the more east you go, the more conservative people are. El Dorado is a solid Republican area..
Bay Area really screws things up, they go 80+ Percent towards Liberal Causes, and it takes most of the other parts of the state to make it close. LA is a little more Liberal, but within a few percent, Orange County isn't as Republican as it once was. San Diego is still a good Conservative Base.
Go on the California Secretary of State's site and look at maps by county of prior elections... you'll see statewide propositions there that'll blow your mind how the Bay Area throws the state so far off.
