if you are shooting colour film or digital, you might want a polarizer,
and perhaps at some point a neutral density filter of some type. there's nothing "obvious", or necessary, about a UV or skylight filter. if you are shooting black & white film, then coloured filters are useful for certain effects. yellow, orange, and red, progressively, in that order, will increase contrast, especially between clouds and sky. again, a UV type filter is not at all necessary, but some people like to use them, to reduce atmospheric haze & achieve greater clarity in landscapes. most folks simply use them instead of a lens cap, as a convenient way to add a layer of protection for their more expensive lens front element, while keeping their kodak ready to shoot. they are usually removed when making critical photographs. adams would often use a light blue filter, the opposite effect of a UV, to accentuate atmospheric haze, imparting an enhanced feeling of depth and space in a landscape. boki-san |
