    Let's see, if I treat this like BiF's...

    AF...less is more. reduce the active AF points so you don't get interference from the other items in the VF, it will help with lock on. Try single or nine pts.

    Make sure you drag the shutter...start you pan, release and continue your pan past the shutter release.

    If you have Focus Tracking with Lock on, make sure it's on Short.

    Shutter speed is a matter of effect. Remember you can communicate motion in a few ways. Using your images, you can have the cyclist sharp and everything else..BG, spokes etc blurred? Slow shutter speed and keep practicing!! Too high of a shutter speed and you'll lose the sense of motion by freezing everything. Or, you can have BG and FG in sharp focus, but cyclist blurred? Don't pan...just crank up the shutter speed. From your images, you're caught in the middle and you just need more practice. I would opt for 1/250th or slower and smooth panning.
