The second image looks nice and sharp. I don't think there's anything fundamentally wrong with your sharpening technique.

But: for me this image has a bit too much dof and the light is too flat, so it doesn't look very 3-dimensional. Maybe a different shooting angle and larger aperture would have given it more pop and give it the edge you're after.
