I also need to consider the 1.6 crop of my 40D. Distance from the cars will vary from location to location. There are several places at RA where you're literally feet away but most are separated by a large runoff area and fencing. I'm not too familiar with Thunderhill but there are a lot of elevation changes so my thought was that having a decent zoom would make for some interesting angles even if I was some distance away.
