really depends on the surroundings and what you want to capture at the time.

Not really sure what to suggest, given that he's shopping on ebay for 500 and 1000mm lenses. If he's got even one zoom lens (point of reference) for that camera he should be able to ballpark a focal length that he wants/needs.
