    resistance to burning, or in effect... a higher flash point.
    higher octane actualy resists burning longer, hence the use in high compression and/or high boost applications to resist knocking or ping.
    and also requires or is aided by a high energy ignition system.
    I may be talking about a completely differnt issue or aspect of gasoline, but thats my .02
