My 01 Passat (1.6l, 45K on clock) cut out (not a stall or stutter, the engine just died). Turning the key results in a clicking sound from the fuel pump relay, the engine turned over but wouldn't fire. After a few minutes the engined fired up. This happened intermittantly initially, but became more frequent and will now not start at all. Clicking sound from relay remains. Tried replacing relay, but it also just clicks. No initial sound from pump priming itself, so I suppose its electrical somewhere. Mechanic looking at it couldn't figure it out, and to get to VW diagnostics would now require a tow. Any ideas, please?
