    it can be done without the tools but is not easy....

    It is 10x easier to just get the VVT tool to compress the VVT and take the tension off the timing chain. You can then remove the VVT solenoid without having to touch the cams and replace the gasket underneath.

    Set the engine to TDC on cyl#1 before doing anything. Mark 16 pins of the chain between both cams to ensure the intake cam is timed in relation to the exhaust cam (with the exhaust at TDC cyl#1)
