Hey all,
I have a 2003 GTI 1.8T. A good friend of mine has a 2001 Audi TTq (1.8T.) Another good friend of mine is a VW service writer (back in Chicago, I am in Seattle.) He tells me that the service interval for my timing belt is 100k. My friend with the TT just got a phone call this week from the local Audi dealer's service department, telling him that Audi just changed the recommended service interval on the timing belt, from 100k to 60k, and asked him if he wanted to schedule an appointment to have his changed. (His car has just under 60k on it.) I shared this info with my VW service writer friend, and he hasn't heard anything like this on the VW side, and in fact, VW supposedly just extended the warranty on my car for the timing belt (and all potential collateral damage) to 100k. My GTI has 65k on it, and with the information from my TT friend, I'm a little nervous. (And I've seen a lot of TB failure threads on Vortex and such for cars past the 60k mark.) I trust my service writer friend, but am wondering if he's missing something. That or perhaps the 1.8T in the 2001 Audi is slightly different from the 1.8T in my 2003 VW? (I know the manifolds are different to accomondate the dual IC's but didn't think the internal parts would be any different.) Should I plan to have my GTI's belt changed? Or should I rest easy knowing that I'll make it to 100k (and/or be covered under warranty if it pops?) Thanks in advance, Jim Jim |
